On April 4, 2025, a container ship departed Singapore’s Panjang terminal, amidst escalating global trade tensions. Two days prior, on April 2, US President Trump had implemented widespread tariffs, including a 10% levy on global imports and higher duties on key trade partners. In response, China announced on Friday that, effective April 10, it would impose a 34% tariff on all US imports, a move confirmed by their finance ministry.

Additionally, China’s Commerce Ministry introduced export controls on seven rare earth elements, vital for medical and electronic industries, and declared its intention to file a lawsuit against the US tariffs at the World Trade Organization (WTO). This followed Trump’s decision to impose a 34% tariff on Chinese goods, further intensifying the trade conflict and prompting China to promise retaliatory actions.”
