The federal government is set to inaugurate the National Agribusiness Policy Mechanism (NAPM) to boost agricultural productivity, stabilize food prices, and foster economic growth.

The NAPM, part of efforts to modernize agriculture through data-driven policies and public-private partnerships, was discussed by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) meeting in Abuja on Friday.

Shettima emphasized the importance of the Green Imperative Project (GIP), a $1.1 billion Nigeria-Brazil initiative signed on March 17, 2025, to upgrade 774 Nigerian farms with Brazilian technology, aiming to create jobs and enhance productivity.

He also announced that President Bola Tinubu approved ₦15 billion for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to prepare for floods during the rainy season.
Marion Moon, PFSCU Executive Secretary, noted that NAPM targets high food inflation and low agricultural yields, with a pilot survey completed in 13 states and a full launch set for June 2025.

Supported by data analytics and a digital platform, NAPM aims to address food inflation, inefficient subsidies, and outdated farming practices for sustainable rural development.

The meeting included the likes of Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi and Biodun Oyebanji, governor of Ekiti State. Deputy governors present at the meeting were Umar Kadafur of Borno State and Patricia Onyemaechi Obila of Ebonyi State. Ministers, private sector leaders, and international partners were also present at the meeting.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The NAPM, GIP, and flood preparedness funding represent a multifaceted approach to revitalizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By combining data analytics, international partnerships, and proactive governance, the government is laying the groundwork for a more productive, resilient, and inclusive agricultural economy.

The success of the initiative highly depends on effective implementation, stakeholder collaboration, and addressing systemic challenges like corruption and insecurity.
