The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has opened the next, and arguably most decisive, phase of its nationwide recruitment drive, ordering thousands of successful candidates to converge on Abuja for physical screening and documentation beginning next week.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Service said the exercise would run from September 7 to 15, 2026, at the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College (NCCSC) in Gwagwalada, Abuja, marking the culmination of a selection process that sifted through more than half a million job applications.

The NCS had earlier disclosed that only 3,852 candidates emerged successful out of 573,680 applications submitted across its three entry cadres, a success rate of roughly 0.7 percent, figures that place the service among the most competitive employers in the public sector this year.

The Superintendent Cadre attracted the heaviest traffic, with 276,995 applications yielding 1,275 offers of employment. The Inspectorate Cadre, though it drew fewer applicants at 128,604, proved the toughest gauntlet of all: only 367 candidates made the cut, translating to roughly one successful applicant for every 350 who applied.

The Customs Assistant Cadre, meanwhile, received 168,081 applications and produced the largest single batch of successful candidates, 2,210 in total, or about one in every 76 applicants.

With the numbers settled, attention now shifts to logistics. The NCS has staggered the screening by cadre and geography to manage the crowds expected to descend on the NCCSC campus.

Candidates in the Superintendent Cadre to be engaged as Assistant Superintendents of Customs II (ASC II) will report over four days, from September 7 through 10, with each day assigned to a specific cluster of states:

  • September 7: Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta
  • September 8: Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Ekiti, Gombe, FCT, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna
  • September 9: Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun
  • September 10: Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara

Candidates entering as Assistant Inspectors of Customs (AIC) in the Inspectorate Cadre have a tighter window, just two days, September 14 and 15.

Those from Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe, FCT, Imo, Jigawa, and Kaduna states are to report on September 14, while candidates from Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara states follow on September 15.

The service was unambiguous on one point: attendance is compulsory, and candidates must appear strictly on the date assigned to their state and cadre. Anyone who misses their slot risks outright disqualification, regardless of how strong their earlier performance in the recruitment process may have been.

Beyond punctuality, the NCS has laid out a detailed documentation checklist that candidates ignore at their peril. Each candidate must arrive with originals and photocopies of:

  • Their National Identification Number (NIN)
  • A birth certificate or declaration of age
  • Relevant educational certificates
  • A certificate of state of origin
  • Two recent passport photographs
  • A completed guarantor’s form
  • An NYSC certificate, where applicable

In a detail that hints at the physical component of the exercise, candidates have also been instructed to turn up dressed for activity in a white T-shirt, shorts, and canvas shoes, suggesting the screening will go beyond desk verification into fitness or physical assessment territory typical of paramilitary recruitment drives.

As is often the case with high-stakes public sector recruitment in Nigeria, the NCS used its statement to sound a warning against fraudsters looking to exploit anxious candidates.

The service cautioned successful applicants against anyone demanding money or claiming they could influence the outcome of the process and reiterated that candidates who present false documents or fail to show up altogether face disqualification.

The NCS said candidates who clear the physical screening and documentation stage will be issued further instructions on subsequent steps toward their eventual enlistment.

For the 3,852 successful candidates, the Abuja exercise represents the last major hurdle before formal engagement, the tangible finish line after a selection process that began with well over half a million hopefuls.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Nigeria Customs Service will screen 3,852 successful candidates (out of 573,680 applicants) at NCCSC, Gwagwalada, Abuja, from September 7–15, 2026, Superintendent Cadre from Sept 7–10, Inspectorate Cadre on Sept 14–15, each date tied to specific states.

Attendance on your assigned date is compulsory, and missing it or presenting false documents means automatic disqualification, so candidates must confirm their state’s date, bring the full required document set, and dress appropriately (white T-shirt, shorts, and canvas shoes).

The NCS also warns candidates to ignore anyone demanding money or claiming they can influence the outcome.
