The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has approved the removal of the Chairman of Sagbama Local Government Area, Alice Allen Tangi, and her deputy, Sufade Jefferson Tobi, over allegations of gross misconduct.

The decision was reached during Tuesday’s plenary after lawmakers considered a petition against the two elected council officials.

Speaker of the Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, said the lawmakers acted under the Bayelsa State Local Government Administration Law, 2000, and other relevant legal provisions.

The petition against Tangi accused her of failing to provide the House with regular financial reports and the annual budget before carrying out government spending.

She was also accused of repeatedly failing to appear before the Assembly despite invitations to respond to the allegations.

The Speaker said the required two-thirds majority was obtained to remove the council chairman and her deputy.

Seventeen of the 20 lawmakers present voted in favour of the resolution.

The Assembly said the decision would be forwarded to the executive arm of the state government for further action.

The lawmakers also said the affected officials failed to appear before the House despite several invitations.

They relied on provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Bayelsa State Local Government Administration Law in reaching the decision.
