Tinubu sends message to Umahi amid Habila death controversy
President Bola Tinubu has celebrated the Minister of Works, David Umahi, on his 63rd birthday, praising his performance in government amid ongoing public attention over the death of Mary Habila at the minister’s residence.
Habila was found dead at Umahi’s residence, where she had reportedly gone as part of a medical support team attached to the minister.
The circumstances surrounding her death led to public concern and calls for a full investigation.
Umahi has denied involvement in her death and said the incident was reported to the police.
He has also supported the idea of an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death.
Tinubu, in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Umahi as one of his outstanding and hardworking ministers.
The president praised the minister’s efforts in overseeing road construction and rehabilitation projects across the country, saying Umahi remained committed to delivering infrastructure that would serve Nigerians for years.
The birthday message came as questions continue to trail the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death, with calls from some groups for a transparent investigation into the incident.
Before his appointment as a minister, Umahi served as Ebonyi State governor from 2015 to 2023 and later represented Ebonyi South in the Senate.
Tinubu said Umahi’s approach to his duties showed dedication, noting that the minister often visits project sites personally rather than depending only on reports from officials.
The president urged Umahi to continue with the pace of road development and other infrastructure projects in line with the administration’s plans.
Tinubu also wished the minister good health and strength as he continues his role in public service.
