Troops Neutralise Bandit, Recover Items in Jos South

Military troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have neutralized one suspected bandit and repelled an armed militia attack following a volatile confrontation during a clearance operation in the Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, security sources confirmed.

The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, June 26, marks the latest flashpoint in the ongoing security campaign against armed livestock rustlers and criminal elements increasingly active across the restive hills of Plateau State.

According to counter-insurgency and security expert Zagazola Makama, who disclosed details of the operation via his X handle, troops had mobilized to the Gero high grounds in Jos South LGA at approximately 7:00 a.m., acting on credible intelligence reports concerning the activities of armed livestock rustlers in the area.

The operation, which initially appeared routine, took a dangerous turn almost immediately. Troops had barely intercepted a herd of cattle allegedly grazing on cultivated farmland, a recurring source of farmer-herder tension across the Middle Belt region, when they came under sporadic gunfire from suspected militia lurking in the surrounding terrain.

The attack, swift and calculated, bore the hallmarks of a coordinated ambush designed to overwhelm a forward patrol unit operating in unfamiliar high ground.

Rather than retreat, the troops held their positions under fire and immediately called for reinforcements, a decision that proved decisive.

Responding with speed and coordination, additional troops from Sector 3, stationed at Rafin Bauna, were rapidly mobilized to the scene. They were joined by a separate contingent personally led by the commander of Sector 6, whose swift deployment helped tip the balance of the engagement in favour of the security forces.

In the firefight that followed, one suspected bandit was neutralized. The remaining attackers, unable to withstand the reinforced military response, fled the area, abandoning personal effects in their haste to escape.

A thorough search of the scene conducted by troops in the aftermath of the encounter yielded two mobile phones and the sum of ₦14,000 in cash items believed to have been discarded by the fleeing suspects during their retreat.

The intercepted cattle, at the center of the initial confrontation, were moved to a secure location pending further necessary action by the appropriate authorities.

Security forces have since maintained a heightened presence across the affected areas, with clearance operations and domination patrols continuing around the clock.

Military authorities say the sustained deployments are designed to deny criminal elements freedom of movement and prevent further attacks on farming communities and security personnel.

Plateau State has long struggled with cycles of farmer-herder violence, banditry, and armed militancy, particularly across its rural and semi-urban fringes, claiming hundreds of lives and displacing thousands of residents in recent years.

The Gero high grounds, with their rugged and concealing terrain, have increasingly become a haven for suspected criminal groups exploiting the landscape to evade security forces.

Operation Enduring Peace, established to restore order and protect civilian populations across the state, has intensified its operational footprint in recent months as part of a broader military push to reclaim volatile communities from the grip of armed groups.

As investigations into Thursday’s encounter continue, authorities are expected to provide further details regarding the identity of the neutralized bandit and the fate of the seized items.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Troops of Operation Enduring Peace demonstrated swift tactical professionalism when they repelled a militia ambush during a clearance operation in Jos South, Plateau State, neutralizing one bandit and forcing others to flee.

The incident underscores two critical realities: that farmer-herder tensions in the region remain a dangerous flashpoint capable of escalating into armed confrontations at any moment, and that the military’s ability to rapidly coordinate reinforcements across multiple sectors is proving to be a decisive factor in containing the threat.

With patrols ongoing, the battle to deny criminal elements a foothold in Plateau State is far from over.
