The Ondo State Government has sanctioned 17 students from three public secondary schools after a sign-out video recorded following the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) went viral on social media.
The affected students are from Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, Aquinas College, Akure, and CAC Grammar School.
The students were accused of misconduct during celebrations held after completing their examinations.
The viral video showed students tearing their school uniforms and chanting slogans considered inappropriate.
The decision was reached after an emergency meeting between the Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the management of the affected schools at the ministry’s headquarters in Akure.
As part of the disciplinary measures, the government ordered that the students’ WASSCE results and official testimonials be withheld indefinitely.
Their names have also been entered into a newly created misconduct register, known as a black book, in their respective schools.
The ministry further directed all secondary school principals in the state to establish similar records for students involved in misconduct in the future.
The government also sanctioned some school officials.
Senior officers in the affected schools were issued queries over what was described as poor supervision that allowed the celebrations to become disorderly.
Authorities also directed that any student seen in the video who was not a member of the graduating class should be expelled immediately.
Speaking after the disciplinary meeting, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, said the state government would not tolerate actions capable of undermining discipline and damaging the reputation of schools in Ondo State.
He stated that although students have the right to celebrate the completion of their examinations, such celebrations must be conducted responsibly and within acceptable limits.
Ajibefun expressed concern over the growing sign-out culture among secondary school students, warning that it should not be used as an excuse for unruly behaviour or actions aimed at gaining attention on social media.
According to him, the government remains committed to protecting the standards and reputation of the state’s education sector and will continue to take action against indiscipline in schools.
