A former governorship candidate in Nasarawa State, David Umbugadu, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) barely weeks after joining the party.
Umbugadu confirmed his decision in a resignation letter dated March 24, 2026, which was addressed to the APC chairman of Ika/Wangibi Ward in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area.
In the letter, he explained that he could no longer remain in the ruling party due to certain internal developments.
According to him, there were “political manoeuvres” within the APC that could affect his chances in the next governorship race. He stated that he was not comfortable with the situation currently unfolding within the party.
His exit comes barely three weeks after he was welcomed into the APC. Umbugadu had formally joined the party on March 2, 2026, during an event held at the Government House in Lafia.
The event was attended by several prominent political figures in the state, including the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, former governors Abdullahi Adamu and Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, as well as other APC leaders.
At the time, the reception was seen as a significant political shift in the state.
However, the latest development has reversed that move, as Umbugadu has now decided to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he described as his political home and base.
The politician has a long-standing history with the PDP. He joined the party in 2014 after leaving the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
Umbugadu remained an active member of the PDP for several years and contested the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections in Nasarawa State under the party’s platform.
