Health workers under the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations staged a protest on Thursday at the Unity Fountain in the Federal Capital Territory.
The demonstration was organised in opposition to the proposed Health Sector Regulatory Bill currently before the National Assembly of Nigeria.
The protesting health workers argued that the bill, if passed, would place all medical and allied health professions under the regulatory authority of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
According to the unions, each health profession already has its own regulatory body. They warned that the proposed legislation would make other health professionals subordinate to medical doctors.
The protesters also disclosed that they plan to move to the National Assembly later in the day to present their concerns directly to lawmakers.
More details are expected to follow as the situation develops.
