Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s determination to defeat terrorism, declaring that those responsible for the recent attacks in Maiduguri will be decisively confronted.

The Vice President made this known on Wednesday during a visit to victims of the bomb blasts receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Speaking during the visit, Shettima stressed that beyond the directive issued by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to security chiefs, the Federal Government is increasing investment in military equipment and logistics to strengthen the fight against terrorism nationwide.

Condemning the multiple explosions that rocked Maiduguri on Monday, which left over 20 people dead and more than 100 others affected, the Vice President described the attackers as barbaric, insisting that no justification exists for targeting innocent civilians.

He explained that his visit was aimed at sympathising with victims and their families while reassuring them of the government’s support. According to him, assistance would be provided through the National Emergency Management Agency, the North East Development Commission, and the Borno State Government.

Shettima was accompanied by the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Usman Kadafur, alongside the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, and the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Ahmed Ahijo, among other officials.

What you should know

The Vice President’s visit comes amid renewed security concerns in northeastern Nigeria following deadly bombings in Maiduguri.

His remarks reinforce the Federal Government’s ongoing military strategy, which includes boosting operational capacity and supporting affected communities. The involvement of agencies like NEMA and the North East Development Commission highlights a dual approach—combining security action with humanitarian response.

The attacks also signal a possible resurgence of insurgent activity in the region, raising concerns despite years of relative calm in the state.
