Nine members of the Nigerian Senate have left their political parties and moved to the African Democratic Congress.

The lawmakers made their decision known during plenary at the Senate on Thursday.

Among the senators who changed parties, five were members of the Peoples Democratic Party, three belonged to the Labour Party, while one previously represented the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Those who left the PDP are Dauda Yaroe, Lawal Usman, Ogochi Onawe, Aminu Tambuwal and Austin Akobundu. Three senators who departed from the Labour Party are Ireti Kingibe, Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye.

Most of the lawmakers who left the PDP and the Labour Party said their decision was connected to internal problems affecting leadership within their parties.

Meanwhile, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe explained that his exit from APGA followed his removal from the party in September 2025.

The development was officially recorded during the Senate session as the lawmakers announced their new political platform before their colleagues in the chamber.
