The Niger State Government has directed all political appointees and public office holders who plan to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions by March 23, 2026.

The directive was issued to prevent any violation of the rules guiding the electoral process.

The Secretary to the Government of Niger State, Abubakar Usman, announced the decision after the Independent National Electoral Commission released the revised timetable for the 2027 elections.

According to the timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

Political parties are also expected to begin their primaries on April 23, 2026.

Usman explained that the instruction was given to ensure compliance with electoral laws, which require public office holders who want to contest elections to resign from their positions at least one month before party primaries.

He said the Niger State Government is committed to following the rule of law and ensuring that all political activities are conducted according to constitutional and electoral guidelines.

The SSG stated, “I am to draw the attention of all Political Appointees and other Government Officials who desire to contest for elective positions that the conduct of party primaries is expected to commence from April 23, 2026.

“In line with this development, all such Appointees and Officials are advised to resign their appointments by March 23, 2026, to meet the one-month requirement for resignation before seeking elective positions.”
