The Nigeria Police Council has unanimously endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The Council, chaired by President Bola Tinubu and comprising the 36 state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, reached the decision during a meeting at the State House, Abuja.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the endorsement after the closed-door session, which lasted about 40 minutes.

In Line With Police Act

President Bola Tinubu appointed Disu as the acting IGP

The meeting, which began at about 2:15 pm upon the President’s arrival, was held in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which require the Council to consider and advise on the appointment of the IGP.

Disu’s confirmation follows the resignation of former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

He was appointed in an acting capacity last week and promoted from the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) before his elevation. He is reportedly due for retirement in about two months.

Sources indicated that following the Council’s endorsement, the President may transmit the appointment to the Senate for confirmation in line with constitutional and statutory provisions. However, some legal opinions suggest that Senate confirmation may not be required for the appointment of an IGP.

Among those present at the meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, alongside state governors and other statutory members.

Role of the Police Council

Established under the Police Act 2020, the Nigeria Police Council serves as a critical advisory body on policing matters.

Its responsibilities include advising the President on internal security policy, police administration, budgeting, and senior appointments and promotions within the Force. While it does not interfere in day-to-day operations, the Council ensures due process in major institutional decisions, particularly the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.

Monday’s endorsement comes as Nigeria continues to confront complex security challenges, highlighting the importance of stable leadership at the helm of the country’s policing structure.

What you should know

The Nigeria Police Council has unanimously endorsed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police following Kayode Egbetokun’s resignation.

The decision, taken at a State House meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu, complies with the Police Act 2020.

The next step may involve Senate confirmation, although there is debate over whether it is constitutionally required.
