Nigeria’s electricity sector braces for potential supply challenges as two of the country’s leading energy companies begin a four-day planned maintenance program on critical gas production infrastructure that feeds the nation’s power generation network.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and Seplat Energy Plc jointly announced that routine maintenance operations commenced today on major gas production facilities, with work scheduled to continue through February 15. The maintenance will temporarily reduce gas volumes flowing into the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) pipeline network, which serves as a crucial artery for fuel supply to gas-fired power plants across the country.

The timing of the maintenance comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with persistent electricity supply challenges. Gas-fired power plants account for a substantial portion of the nation’s generating capacity, making any disruption to gas supply a matter of concern for both industrial consumers and residential electricity users.

“This is routine maintenance that is necessary for the long-term reliability and safety of our gas production facilities,” sources close to the operation explained. “While there will be a temporary reduction in supply, both companies have been working to minimize the impact on power generation.”

Industry analysts suggest the maintenance could result in a modest decrease in electricity output during the four-day window, though the extent of the impact will depend on several factors, including the availability of alternative fuel sources and the operational status of other power plants in the national grid.

Both NNPC Ltd and Seplat Energy have sought to reassure stakeholders that contingency measures are in place. The companies indicated that alternative supply arrangements are being implemented to mitigate the shortfall, though they did not provide specific details about these arrangements or which facilities might be affected.

“Alternative supply arrangements are underway,” the companies stated in their announcement, adding that full gas flow is expected to resume immediately following the completion of maintenance work on February 15.

The NGIC pipeline network plays a vital role in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure, transporting natural gas from production facilities to distribution points and power plants. Any disruption to this network has ripple effects throughout the electricity supply chain.

Power sector observers note that scheduled maintenance, while potentially disruptive in the short term, is essential for preventing more serious unplanned outages and ensuring the long-term integrity of energy infrastructure. Nigeria has experienced significant infrastructure challenges in its power sector, making preventive maintenance increasingly important.

The four-day maintenance window represents a relatively brief intervention, though consumers and businesses dependent on a stable electricity supply may still experience some impact during this period. The extent of any power disruptions will likely vary by region and will depend on the grid’s ability to compensate for reduced gas supply through other generating sources.

As of press time, neither company has released detailed information about which specific facilities are undergoing maintenance or the precise volume of gas supply reduction expected during the maintenance period.

Full restoration of gas supply is anticipated by the evening of February 15, with normal power generation levels expected to resume shortly thereafter.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

NNPC Ltd and Seplat Energy are conducting essential four-day maintenance on major gas facilities through February 15, which may cause temporary power disruptions across Nigeria.

While both companies have arranged alternative supplies to minimize impact, some electricity users should expect modest outages during this period. Full gas supply and normal power generation will resume immediately after maintenance concludes on February 15.
