Tottenham Hotspur have dismissed head coach Thomas Frank less than eight months into his tenure after a 2–1 home defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday deepened the club’s struggles in the Premier League.

The loss leaves Spurs sitting 16th in the table, just five points clear of the relegation zone. The North London side are winless in their last eight league matches, their worst run in the competition since October 2008.

Tottenham have managed only two victories in their past 17 Premier League games, collecting a mere 12 points during that stretch, a sequence that ultimately prompted the board’s decision.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the club confirmed the change in leadership.

“The club has taken the decision to make a change in the men’s head coach position, and Thomas Frank will leave today,” Tottenham said.

“Thomas was appointed in June 2025, and we have been determined to give him the time and support needed to build for the future together.

“However, results and performances have led the board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary.”

Frank, who previously managed Brentford, was appointed in June following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou. He signed a contract running until 2028 but struggled to turn around Spurs’ domestic form despite encouraging performances in Europe.

Under the Danish coach, Tottenham secured automatic qualification for the Champions League round of 16 after finishing fourth in their group. However, their league campaign has been disappointing, with a record of seven wins, eight draws, and 11 defeats.

“Throughout his time at the club, Thomas has conducted himself with unwavering commitment, giving everything in his efforts to move the club forward,” the statement added.

“We would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him every success in the future.”

Spurs’ domestic cup campaigns have also ended in disappointment. They were knocked out of the League Cup by Newcastle in the fourth round in October and eliminated from the FA Cup by Aston Villa in the third round last month.

What you should know

Thomas Frank’s dismissal comes amid Tottenham’s alarming slide toward the relegation zone, with just two wins in 17 league matches.

Although he guided the club to the Champions League last 16, poor domestic results proved decisive. Spurs are currently 16th in the Premier League and struggling for consistency.

The board cited performances and results as key reasons for the decision, signaling urgency to stabilise the club’s season and avoid a deeper crisis.
