Dominic Solanke produced a moment of sheer brilliance with a stunning scorpion kick that dealt a significant setback to Manchester City’s Premier League title challenge, as Tottenham recovered from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s team appeared firmly on course for victory after first-half strikes from Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo put them in control in north London.

However, Tottenham responded strongly after the break, with Solanke first pulling one back before unleashing an extraordinary acrobatic effort that restored parity and shifted the momentum of the contest.

The England forward’s audacious finish evoked memories of Olivier Giroud’s iconic overhead-style goal for Arsenal against Crystal Palace in 2017.

Ironically, it was Tottenham’s fiercest north London rivals who stood to gain the most from Solanke’s moment of inspiration.

Some sections of the Spurs fanbase may not have been overly disappointed by the prospect of defeat, given Manchester City’s position as the main obstacle preventing Arsenal from lifting the league title for the first time in 22 years.

Yet Arsenal’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Leeds on Saturday meant City entered the weekend with no room for error, and the dropped points left Guardiola’s side six points adrift of the leaders.

With third-placed Aston Villa also suffering defeat at Brentford on Sunday, the weekend unfolded perfectly for Arsenal at the summit.

Tottenham’s midweek win at Eintracht Frankfurt, which secured progression to the Champions League last 16, had already strengthened Thomas Frank’s hopes of keeping his job, and this resilient fightback provided further encouragement for the under-pressure Dane.

City’s recent 2-0 wins over Wolves and Galatasaray had done little to dispel concerns that Guardiola’s side remain far from their peak.

Once again, their display was uneven, reinforcing the sense of decline from the dominant team that captured six league titles in seven seasons prior to last campaign.

With just one victory in their last six Premier League matches, City have allowed Arsenal to regain momentum following their own recent stumble.

Guardiola’s men must now respond quickly, starting on Wednesday as they look to protect a 2-0 first-leg advantage against Newcastle in the League Cup semi-final, before an enormous league encounter with Liverpool next weekend.

Cherki had handed City an ideal opening in the 11th minute.

Bernardo Silva initiated the move by dispossessing Yves Bissouma before Erling Haaland slipped the ball through to Cherki.

With Tottenham’s defenders retreating, the French playmaker punished them with a low, precise strike that zipped into the far corner from the edge of the area.

It marked Cherki’s fourth goal in six outings and was soon followed by a glaring miss from Haaland, who lifted his effort onto the roof of the net to Guardiola’s visible frustration.

City doubled their advantage just before the interval through Semenyo.

Radu Dragusin’s careless pass was intercepted by Rodri, who found Silva, and the midfielder intelligently squared the ball for the unmarked Semenyo to finish confidently from 12 yards amid a chorus of boos.

The goal was the Ghanaian’s fourth in five appearances across all competitions since his move from Bournemouth.

Tottenham, flat and uninspired in the opening half, were handed a lifeline eight minutes after the restart.

City’s appeals for offside were waved away as Solanke brought Xavi Simons’ pass under control inside the box despite pressure.

Marc Guehi attempted a desperate challenge, but Solanke managed to poke the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma from close range.

Manchester City Players

City, who had dominated proceedings for so long, began to unravel and were punished again in the 70th minute.

Conor Gallagher’s aggressive press forced a turnover and he floated a cross towards Solanke, who twisted acrobatically in mid-air to flick an astonishing effort over Donnarumma and into the top corner from 10 yards.

With City reeling, only an excellent save from Donnarumma to deny Simons prevented Tottenham from completing a remarkable turnaround and claiming all three points.

What you should know

Dominic Solanke’s performance underlined Tottenham’s resilience and attacking quality at a critical stage of the season.

His spectacular equaliser not only earned Spurs a vital point but also had wider implications for the Premier League title race, halting Manchester City’s pursuit and strengthening Arsenal’s position at the top. For City, the draw highlighted ongoing inconsistency and mounting pressure as they struggle to rediscover their dominant form.

Tottenham, meanwhile, continue to show signs of revival under Thomas Frank, combining European progress with renewed belief domestically.
