The African Development Bank (AfDB) has officially kicked off its search for a new president following the release of a candidate list.

The announcement, made by the Steering Committee of the Board of Governors after a two-day meeting at the bank’s headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, reveals a diverse slate of candidates representing a wide range of Africa’s leadership and development expertise.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the committee stated: “After thoroughly reviewing the candidatures, we have cleared the following candidates for the office of President of the AfDB in the next election scheduled for May 29.”

The shortlisted contenders are Mr. Hott Amadou from Senegal, Dr. Maimbo Munzele of Zambia, Mr. Tah Ould from Mauritania, Mr. Tolli Mahamat of Chad, and Ms. Tshabalala Swazi from South Africa.

Each candidate brings a unique background and vision to the race, setting the stage for a highly competitive election that could determine the future direction of Africa’s premier development finance institution.

The election will decide who succeeds the current president, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, who has been at the helm since 2015 and has steered the bank through significant reforms and challenging global economic conditions.

The outcome of this leadership contest is expected to have far-reaching implications for Africa’s development agenda, influencing areas such as infrastructure, economic growth, and climate resilience.
