Real Madrid delivered a commanding 3-1 victory over Manchester City in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League knockout round play-offs at the Santiago Bernabéu, sealing their advancement with an aggregate score of 6-3. Kylian Mbappé stole the show with a hat trick that ultimately doused City’s hopes of mounting a comeback. The French forward wasted no time, opening the scoring in the 4th minute with an assist from R. Asencio. Mbappé doubled Madrid’s lead in the 33rd minute after a well-placed pass from Rodrygo, firmly establishing Los Blancos’ dominance.

Manchester City struggled to break down Madrid’s resolute defence; the pressure was compounded when Ilkay Gündoğan was booked in the 28th minute, and Jude Bellingham also picked up a yellow in the 38th minute. The first half ended 2-0 in favour of Real Madrid. In the 61st minute, Mbappé completed his hat trick by converting a pass from F. Valverde, effectively putting the game beyond City’s reach. A late consolation goal from N. González in stoppage time, assisted by O. Marmoush, did little to change the outcome as Madrid maintained their dominance.

Even though City managed 51% possession and forced five crucial saves, their four shots on target failed to trouble a well-organized Madrid defence, which recorded eight shots on target. With this decisive performance, Real Madrid has secured its progression to the next stage of the Champions League, while Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have been eliminated from the competition.
