Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has lightheartedly admitted he is feeling “afraid” ahead of his team’s highly anticipated showdown with Nigeria, while stressing that the Desert Foxes must be fully ready for a demanding challenge at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Mahrez openly praised the strength of the Super Eagles, noting that the current Nigerian squad poses a greater attacking threat than the team Algeria encountered at AFCON 2019.

He pointed to the depth and quality within Nigeria’s ranks, insisting Algeria cannot afford any lapse in focus.

The winger highlighted Nigeria’s attacking efficiency at the tournament, warning that his side must deliver a top-level performance to advance. “I’m afraid (laughs). They (Nigeria) scored a lot of goals in this competition.”

Mahrez also hinted that the upcoming clash is likely to be more expansive than Algeria’s previous game against DR Congo, a situation he believes could favour both sides given their attacking quality. “We expect the next match to be more open, which will give us more space to showcase our abilities, and we must be fully prepared.”

Nigeria vs Mozambique

Looking back at previous encounters, the former Manchester City star dismissed comparisons with Algeria’s 2019 semi-final victory over Nigeria, arguing that circumstances have changed significantly. “This match against Nigeria will be very different from the one in 2019. That was in Egypt, with different players, a different style of play, and a different journey.”

Mahrez also spoke candidly about the personal importance of the tournament, confirming that the 2025 edition will be his final appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Now 34, he admitted he is determined to end his international AFCON career on a triumphant note. “This will be my last AFCON. I want to win the Africa Cup of Nations again with this generation; I really want it,” he said.

Nigeria and Algeria are set to battle for a spot in the semi-finals, as two of Africa’s most formidable football nations reignite their rivalry on the continental stage.

What you should know

The Nigeria vs Algeria fixture is one of the standout ties of AFCON 2025, given the history and quality of both teams.

Nigeria are known for their pace, creativity and goal threat, while Algeria bring experience and tactical discipline, led by veterans like Riyad Mahrez.

With Mahrez confirming this as his final AFCON, the stakes are even higher, adding emotional weight to an already intense contest that could shape the tournament’s outcome.
