Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, with the player expected to undergo a medical examination ahead of a move that could be finalised before Saturday.

According to reports by the BBC, the Premier League champions have agreed to trigger Semenyo’s £65 million release clause, which must be activated no later than January 10. The Ghana international is scheduled to complete his medical checks shortly after Bournemouth’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

Despite strong interest from several top English clubs, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham, City emerged as the only side to formally engage Bournemouth in negotiations for the attacker. Their decisive approach has placed them firmly in pole position to complete the deal within the current transfer window.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola hinted that the Tottenham match could mark Semenyo’s final appearance for the club, though he stressed that nothing had been finalised.

“I think it could be the last game,” he said ahead of the fixture.

He added, “That is my personal opinion, but there is nothing agreed and nothing signed. It is my personal opinion as I understand the market and the noise but there is nothing agreed right now.

“He, right now, is our player and I hope it continues.”

Semenyo has been one of Bournemouth’s standout performers this season, scoring nine goals and providing three assists across all competitions. His consistent displays have elevated his reputation as one of the most effective attacking players in the league this campaign.

The 25-year-old joined Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023 in a deal worth over £10 million and has since developed into a key figure for the Cherries. His nine Premier League goals this season have attracted widespread attention, with City now ready to secure his services as they reinforce their squad for the title run-in.

What you should know

Antoine Semenyo’s proposed move to Manchester City represents one of the most significant deals of the January transfer window, both in value and competitive impact.

By agreeing to meet his £65m release clause, City are signalling confidence in his ability to adapt quickly to Pep Guardiola’s system. For Bournemouth, the transfer would mark a major financial gain just two years after signing him from Bristol City.

Semenyo’s numbers this season underline his growth into a reliable Premier League attacker, while City’s swift action suggests they are keen to fend off rival interest and finalise the deal before the deadline.
