Enzo Fernandez struck deep into stoppage time to deal a damaging blow to Manchester City’s Premier League title push, scoring a 94th-minute equaliser that earned Chelsea a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium despite the Blues playing without a permanent manager.
City had looked set for a vital victory after Tijjani Reijnders fired them into a deserved lead just before half-time.

However, injuries to central defenders Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias in the second half disrupted their defensive stability, and the hosts were punished in the closing seconds when Fernandez arrived unmarked at the back post to prod home.
The dropped points leave City only marginally ahead of Aston Villa in second place on goal difference and still six points behind league leaders Arsenal, whose long wait for a Premier League title continues to edge closer to an end.

For Chelsea, the draw offered a rare positive moment in a difficult run that has seen them win just once in their last eight league outings. The point keeps them fifth in the table, but their improved second-half performance saw them move within three points of the top four.
Pep Guardiola was able to restore Rodri to his starting lineup for the first time since early October, and the Spaniard immediately underlined his importance. Recently crowned the world’s best player, Rodri had been sidelined since September 2024 with a cruciate knee ligament injury, and his presence brought greater control to City’s midfield.

Despite dominating large spells, City once again paid for profligacy. Following a goalless draw at Sunderland in midweek that ended their winning run, Guardiola’s side wasted several first-half opportunities. Phil Foden fired narrowly wide, Bernardo Silva curled an effort just over, and Erling Haaland twice came agonisingly close, forcing a fine save from Filip Jorgensen before striking the post.
The breakthrough finally arrived three minutes before the interval when Reijnders danced into space inside the penalty area and thundered a shot past Jorgensen at the near post.
City nearly unravelled immediately after the restart as Gvardiol picked up an ankle injury, leaving gaps at the back that Chelsea exploited. Pedro Neto squandered a golden chance from close range, while the visitors continued to target replacement Abdukodir Khusanov. Gianluigi Donnarumma was called upon to deny Liam Delap from a tight angle as Chelsea grew in confidence.

In the dying moments, Donnarumma produced a stunning save to keep out Fernandez, but the Argentine reacted quickest to the rebound, sliding the ball into the net to silence the Etihad. City players collapsed to the turf in frustration as the reality of another costly setback sank in.
