MultiChoice Secures New Agreement to Continue Distribution of WBD Channels

MultiChoice Group has secured continued access to key Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) content after retaining the distribution rights to 12 WBD thematic channels under a new multi-year, multi-territory agreement between CANAL+ Group and Warner Bros. Discovery.

The pay-TV operator disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, confirming that the agreement spans multiple markets across Africa and Europe. Beyond channel distribution, the deal also covers the distribution of HBO Max and the renewal of selected WBD channels, further deepening collaboration between the global media giants.

The latest agreement marks a significant expansion of the long-standing partnership between CANAL+ Group and Warner Bros. Discovery, strengthening MultiChoice’s content portfolio across its territories. It also allays earlier concerns among subscribers over the possible loss of popular WBD channels on DStv from January 2026.

According to MultiChoice, the deal builds on earlier partnerships concluded in Europe and reinforces collaboration across multiple markets. The company said it extends landmark agreements reached in France in 2024, which included the renewal of the exclusive pay-TV window for Warner Bros. Pictures films just six months after their theatrical release, as well as the integration of HBO Max into select CANAL+ Group offerings.

The agreement also follows a similar deal signed in Poland in 2025, where CANAL+ and Warner Bros. Discovery renewed the distribution of 22 thematic channels—such as TVN24 and Eurosport—alongside four free-to-air channels, including TVN.

Under the renewed arrangement, MultiChoice will continue to distribute 12 Warner Bros. Discovery thematic channels across its markets, offering a combination of exclusive and non-exclusive rights depending on territory. CNN International and Cartoon Network will remain exclusive to South Africa while being available on a non-exclusive basis in other regions. Cartoon Network Porto will be exclusive in Angola and Mozambique but non-exclusive elsewhere.

Other WBD channels—including Discovery Channel, TLC, HGTV, Food Network, TNT Africa, Travel, Investigation Discovery (ID), and Cartoonito—will be distributed on a non-exclusive basis across MultiChoice territories.

The announcement brings relief to subscribers, particularly in Nigeria and other African markets, after MultiChoice had warned in December that customers could lose access to 12 major WBD channels if a new carriage agreement was not reached before the expiry of the previous deal on December 31, 2025.

At the time, MultiChoice said discussions were ongoing, but no agreement had been finalized, raising the possibility that channels such as CNN, Discovery Channel, and Cartoon Network might be dropped from DStv. The successful renewal of the agreement has now averted that outcome, ensuring continuity of popular international content for millions of viewers across MultiChoice’s markets.
