The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced the dissolution of its Kano State executive committees, covering all structures from the state level down to the wards.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, disclosed this development in a statement, explaining that the decision was taken in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution.
Johnson stated that caretaker committees would soon be constituted to manage the party’s affairs in the state on an interim basis, pending further decisions by the national leadership.
He added that the NWC acknowledged and appreciated the contributions of those who had previously served in various capacities within the party’s state, local government, and ward structures, assuring them that their efforts and commitment to the party were recognised.
The move comes against the backdrop of heightened tension within the NNPP following reports suggesting that Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, may be planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The alleged plan has generated strong reactions within the party, particularly from its national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who has openly opposed any move by party members to defect.
Kwankwaso has also issued a firm warning to those considering leaving the NNPP, stressing that political betrayal has never resulted in lasting success.
In a video from a recent party meeting that has since gone viral, the former Kano State governor said he was not surprised by the reported moves, noting that political history provides clear examples of the consequences of abandoning the party.
“I want to remind those who left us that nobody has betrayed us and succeeded. Political history is very clear on this matter. Those who think they can rise by betraying the people and the movement they came from should reflect deeply,” he said.
Kwankwaso further pointed to the large turnout of supporters at the gathering as evidence that the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement continue to command strong grassroots backing across Kano State, despite internal challenges.
What you should know
The dissolution of the NNPP’s Kano State executive committees reflects growing internal strain within the party, largely driven by reports of a possible defection by Governor Abba Yusuf to the APC.
The move signals an attempt by the party’s national leadership to reassert control and stabilise its structures in Kano, a key stronghold of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s warning underscores the party’s hardline stance against defections and highlights the broader political realignments currently shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
