President Bola Tinubu has expressed sympathy with world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following a fatal road accident involving the boxer on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The crash, which occurred on the busy highway, resulted in the loss of two lives, while Joshua sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention.

Reacting to the incident in a statement, President Tinubu extended his condolences to Joshua and the families of the victims, describing the occurrence as a tragic loss.

“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” the President said.

He noted that the incident had dampened the season and placed a heavy emotional burden on the boxer and his family.

“This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season. I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident,” Tinubu stated.

The President also commended Joshua for his contributions to sports and for projecting Nigeria positively on the global stage.

“As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” he said.

Emphasising unity and mutual support in moments of grief, Tinubu offered prayers for the boxer’s recovery and strength.

“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny. I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government confirmed that two male foreign nationals died at the scene of the accident, while Joshua was rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment. According to the state government, “Their remains have since been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.”

What you should know

Anthony Joshua is one of Nigeria’s most prominent global sports figures, widely celebrated for his achievements in professional boxing and his role in promoting the country internationally.

Road accidents along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway remain a major safety concern due to heavy traffic and frequent incidents involving stationary trucks. Presidential messages of sympathy in such cases often serve both as personal outreach to affected individuals and as a reminder of national solidarity during times of tragedy.

The Ogun State Government’s confirmation underscores ongoing efforts to document casualties and manage investigations following serious road crashes.
