U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday to establish a “National Energy Dominance Council,” aimed at ensuring sufficient electricity supply to support the country’s AI race against China. Trump emphasized the need to double the nation’s electricity production, aligning with his administration’s push for increased domestic energy output.
The council will oversee energy policy coordination, streamline resource production, and mitigate potential price surges from trade conflicts. Tech industry leaders have urged the government to address power shortages, as AI-related energy demands are expected to reach five gigawatts by 2028—enough to power five million homes.
Chronic underinvestment and aging power infrastructure have strained the U.S. energy grid. The initiative also aligns with Trump’s “drill, baby, drill” approach, prioritizing energy expansion over environmental concerns. Officials view securing a robust electricity supply as critical to maintaining U.S. leadership in AI development.
