President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the revered Afenifere leader and nationalist, describing him as a fearless advocate for truth, justice, and democracy.
Adebanjo, a prominent Yoruba leader, passed away peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos, on Friday, February 14, at the age of 96, as confirmed by a statement from his family.
In a personal condolence message, Tinubu paid tribute to Adebanjo’s lifelong dedication to Nigeria’s progress and unity.
“His principled voice, which echoed through decades of political activism, will be sorely missed. As a nation, we will miss his invaluable contributions to national affairs,” Tinubu remarked.
The President described Adebanjo as one of the last surviving nationalists who significantly influenced Nigeria’s political landscape.
“From his early days as the Organising Secretary of the Action Group in the First Republic to his leadership role in the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic, Adebanjo remained steadfast in his pursuit of good governance and democracy.”
Tinubu recalled Adebanjo’s pivotal role in the struggle for democracy, especially through his involvement in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
“In times of national crisis, Baba’s courage shone the brightest. He was a key figure in NADECO, leading the charge against military dictatorship and inspiring a movement that laid the foundation for the return of democratic governance,” Tinubu said.
He also acknowledged Adebanjo’s influence on his own political career, particularly during his election as Lagos State Governor in 1999 under the Alliance for Democracy.
Despite their political differences in later years, Tinubu emphasized that his admiration and respect for Adebanjo remained unwavering.
“I had a deep personal connection with Baba Adebanjo; he was a father figure to me,” Tinubu added.
Extending his condolences to Adebanjo’s family, Afenifere leaders, Southwest governors, and Nigerians who shared in his vision, Tinubu urged the nation to take solace in his enduring legacy.
“His life was dedicated to the service of others—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Tinubu concluded.
Details of his burial arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
