Nigeria’s largest telecommunications provider, MTN, has issued a public apology to its customers following widespread dissatisfaction over the sudden 200% increase in the price of its 15GB data plan. The price hike, which raised the cost of the weekly bundle from N2,000 to N6,000, sparked significant backlash on social media, with subscribers expressing outrage over the unexpected increase.

In response to the public outcry, MTN shared an informal and conversational message on social media acknowledging customer frustrations. The company admitted its mistake and sought to mend relationships with affected users. The message read, “To our 15G digital bundle lovers. You dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle.”

Rather than offering detailed justifications for the price change, MTN openly admitted fault, stating, “We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”

The telecom giant further appealed to customers not to remain upset, referencing the Valentine’s season as a reason to let go of grievances. “In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much. Let’s continue our relationship. Thank you for your understanding.”

Despite MTN’s apology, customers remain wary of potential price hikes in the telecommunications sector. While MTN is the first to implement such a drastic increase, industry experts predict that other major providers, including Airtel and Globacom, may follow suit. This speculation follows the Nigerian Communications Commission’s approval of a 50% tariff increase in January.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the new tariff adjustments by telecommunications companies, calling for an immediate reversal of the price hikes. The NLC argues that the increase places an unnecessary financial burden on Nigerians who are already struggling with rising costs of living.

As the debate continues, it remains unclear whether MTN will take additional measures to mitigate the impact of its decision or whether customers will be offered any form of compensation for the abrupt change.
