Summary
The NNPC/Renaissance Joint Venture (JV) has extended a fresh lifeline to cancer treatment services at the National Hospital, Abuja, with a donation of $300,000 dedicated to maintaining the hospital’s vital cancer treatment equipment.
This contribution is aimed at sustaining the state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Radiotherapy Machine, a facility originally donated by the JV in 2019 as part of its broad Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
The earlier intervention covered the full upgrade of the cancer treatment ecosystem—from improved infrastructure to the installation of critical data systems and the training of medical professionals to effectively manage and operate the high-tech equipment.
During an event at the office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare in Abuja on Tuesday, the Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, Engr. Oluwaseyi Omotowa, highlighted the remarkable impact of the initiative. Represented by Nkechi Anaedobe, Head of Business Services at NNPC-NUIMS, he outlined how the facility has already transformed care delivery: over 2,000 patients have received treatment, therapy costs have dropped by 80%, and session durations have reduced dramatically from 12 minutes to just 2 minutes. He added that 712 indigent patients benefitted from subsidised care, receiving discounts ranging from 25% to 100%.
Omotowa explained that sustaining such sophisticated medical technology depends heavily on consistent maintenance, a challenge often constrained by limited funding. With this in mind, the JV is “taking a strategic step forward” by providing financial support that will guarantee timely servicing of the equipment, minimise operational downtime, ensure compliance with global medical standards, and maintain accurate calibration—all critical for the precision required in radiotherapy.

He affirmed the JV’s commitment to forging partnerships that strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare framework, noting that their ongoing work is about building systems that endure. “Together, we are not just treating illnesses; we are fostering a healthier, more resilient nation,” he said.
Responding, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Muhammed Ali Pate, praised the gesture, saying it sets a benchmark for others in the private sector. According to him, the donation aligns with Nigeria’s broader push to revitalise essential health infrastructure, especially within the framework of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed agenda for increased investment in the health sector. He described the intervention as one that significantly expands access to lifesaving cancer treatment for Nigerians.
The Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Muhammad Raji Mahmud, described the support as a “lifeline of hope” for the thousands of cancer patients who rely on the hospital each year. He stated that the involvement of NNPC Limited and Renaissance has drastically reduced dependence on foreign treatment options and has strengthened Nigeria’s internal capacity for managing cancer.
Also speaking, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, Tony Attah, reaffirmed the organisation’s dedication to long-term health-sector transformation. He described the donation as a targeted investment in Nigeria’s future. “This is not charity. This is a strategic investment in the well-being of Nigerians, in the resilience of our health systems, and in the shared future we all strive to build,” he said, emphasising that healthier populations inevitably contribute more meaningfully to national development.
