After more than a decade together, Grammy-winning singer and reality television personality Kandi Burruss has announced she is divorcing her husband, producer Todd Tucker, bringing an end to one of reality TV’s most closely watched marriages.
In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE magazine, Burruss, 49, confirmed the difficult decision, emphasizing that it came after considerable reflection. “After deep thought and a lot of prayer, I’ve made the decision to move forward with a divorce,” she said. “This is a difficult and emotional time, but my focus remains on protecting my peace, being the best mother I can be, and co-parenting with love and respect.”
The Real Housewives of Atlanta star made clear that despite the split, her priority remains her family and personal well-being. “I’m stepping into a new chapter pouring into my work, my family, and my own growth,” Burruss added, requesting privacy as the family navigates this transition.
The couple’s love story began on the set of Bravo’s hit reality series in 2011, when Tucker worked as a producer during the show’s fourth season. Their on-screen romance quickly blossomed into a real-life relationship, culminating in an engagement announcement in January 2013. They married in April 2014 in a ceremony that was chronicled for fans of the long-running franchise.
Together, Burruss and Tucker, 52, share two children: 9-year-old son Ace and 5-year-old daughter Blaze. The dissolution of their marriage will also affect their blended family, which includes Burruss’s 23-year-old daughter Riley from a previous relationship and Tucker’s 29-year-old daughter Kaela.
The announcement comes as something of a surprise to fans who have followed the couple’s journey through the ups and downs documented on reality television. As recently as October 2022, Burruss spoke glowingly about their relationship, crediting their success to strong communication and genuine friendship. “We have a real understanding of each other,” she told PEOPLE at the time, describing their approach as centered on “just great communication and having fun together.”
Burruss, a multi-talented entrepreneur who rose to fame as a member of the R&B group Xscape before becoming a reality TV mainstay and successful businesswoman, has built an empire that includes restaurants, sex toy lines, and various entertainment ventures. Tucker has maintained a successful career behind the camera in television production.
As the couple moves forward separately, Burruss has asked supporters for “privacy, grace, and understanding” while they work to ensure their children’s well-being remains paramount during this life change.
