The Northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the renewed surge of insecurity in the country, describing the latest attacks as distressing reminders of the grave dangers confronting both citizens and security personnel.

The organisation expressed deep grief over the violent assault on a Christ Apostolic Church in Kwara, where worshippers were killed and several others abducted during the attack.

The association also denounced the killing of a senior military officer, a Brigadier General, in Borno by ISWAP terrorists, as well as the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi, incidents that have sparked widespread concern and mourning.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Kaduna, the Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Joseph Hayab, said the association stands firmly with the victims, their families, and the affected communities at this difficult time. He noted that the emotional and psychological suffering endured by families who have lost loved ones or have children in captivity is profound, especially in light of the severity of recent events.

Rev. Hayab reaffirmed that Northern CAN is praying for comfort for the bereaved, divine healing for the injured, and the safe return of every abducted person across the country. While acknowledging the sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces, he warned that the resurgence of terror-related violence appears to be a deliberate effort to further destabilise the nation.

He urged the military to remain resolute, insisting that these incidents must not weaken their morale as operations continue nationwide. Rev. Hayab also called on newly appointed security chiefs and troops to reinforce their strategies and demonstrate renewed commitment to defeating insurgents, bandits, and criminal networks undermining national peace.

He appealed to the Federal Government to intensify efforts in protecting schools, worship centres, and vulnerable communities that remain frequent targets of violent groups. According to him, Nigerians expect firm and decisive action to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are apprehended and prosecuted, giving communities confidence that justice will be served.

The Northern CAN condemned the attacks in their entirety, calling them unacceptable acts of evil that cannot be allowed to persist. The association further urged stronger cooperation among security agencies, state governments, and local community structures to prevent additional tragedies and reinforce safety across the nation.

What you should know

Northern CAN’s reaction underscores growing alarm over recent violent attacks, including assaults on worshippers, the killing of a senior military officer, and the abduction of schoolgirls.

The association is urging stronger government action, renewed military resolve, and improved protection for vulnerable communities to halt the escalating insecurity and restore public confidence nationwide.
