President Bola Tinubu has applauded the Super Eagles for what he described as their best efforts in the push to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, despite their defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sunday’s playoff match.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President encouraged the team to put the disappointment behind them and immediately shift their attention to preparations for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to take place in Morocco between December 2025 and January 2026.

Super Eagles Team

Nigeria missed out on a World Cup ticket for the second straight time after DR Congo defeated the Super Eagles 4–3 on penalties in Morocco. The match, which ended 1–1 after extra time, saw the Congolese side progress at Nigeria’s expense.

Tinubu acknowledged that the result was difficult for Nigerians to accept but emphasised that the players deserved recognition for fighting hard throughout the qualification campaign, particularly after securing victory in their first playoff fixture.

“Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them,” the President said.

DR Congo vs Nigeria

He noted that the setback should serve as a turning point for Nigerian football, urging sports administrators, players, and relevant stakeholders to “plug all the loopholes” and return to the drawing board to ensure future success.

Tinubu stressed that the immediate priority should now be the upcoming AFCON tournament, adding, “Now is the time to focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory.”

What You Should Know
Nigeria has failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive edition, falling to DR Congo in a tense penalty shoot-out.

President Tinubu says the players gave their best and should be supported as they shift focus to the AFCON.

He urged football authorities to address systemic issues in the sport and ensure the team bounces back stronger ahead of the continental tournament in Morocco.
