NLC Condemns Mass Dismissal of Workers by Kaduna Electric

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the recent dismissal of 900 workers by the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC), labeling the action as illegal and unjust. The NLC has demanded the immediate reinstatement of all affected employees, warning of larger protests if the company fails to comply.

In a statement issued by Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, the organization accused KEDC of violating due process and redundancy regulations. It called on all affiliates in Kaduna State to join the protests in solidarity with the dismissed workers. The NLC praised the affected employees for their peaceful demonstrations despite alleged provocations from management, describing their actions as a “heroic struggle against illegality and injustice.”

The congress urged KEDC to reconsider its decision, emphasizing that reinstating the workers would help maintain industrial harmony and restore essential services. It also warned that failure to do so could lead to stronger resistance measures.

In response, KEDC refuted claims of mass dismissals, stating that the restructuring only affected a segment of employees from the Independent System Operator (ISO) under the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). According to the company’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Abdullahi Abdulazeez, the changes are part of a broader transformation strategy aimed at ensuring the company’s long-term sustainability.
