Troops of the 3 Division Garrison/Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) have recorded a significant security breakthrough following the arrest of a suspected arms dealer and the recovery of multiple weapons in Plateau State.

According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer, Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, the suspect, identified as Ishaya Musa, was apprehended on Friday at the Jebbu Bassa Bypass checkpoint in Bassa Local Government Area. The arrest followed an intelligence-driven stop-and-search operation conducted under the newly launched Operation PEACE SHIELD.

During the search, troops uncovered several locally fabricated rifles, a dane gun, an expended cartridge, and other items believed to be linked to illegal weapons distribution. Major Zhakom confirmed that both the suspect and the recovered exhibits are currently in custody as investigations continue.

He stressed that the operation reflects the Joint Task Force’s sustained efforts to stem the flow of illegal arms and restore peace across Plateau and neighbouring communities.

“This successful operation demonstrates our unwavering dedication to protecting law-abiding citizens and preventing the proliferation of illegal weapons,” Major Zhakom stated.

He also appealed to residents for increased cooperation, especially with the festive season drawing near.

“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and always provide timely information to security agencies to support ongoing operations, particularly during the harvest and yuletide seasons,” he added.

What You Should Know

The arrest of suspected gunrunner Ishaya Musa by troops of the 3 Division Garrison/JTF Operation ENDURING PEACE highlights ongoing military efforts to curb the spread of illegal arms in Plateau State.

Conducted under Operation PEACE SHIELD, the intelligence-led operation led to the recovery of locally made rifles and other weapon-related materials. Security forces say the breakthrough reinforces their commitment to safeguarding communities amid persistent threats from armed groups.

With further investigations underway, authorities are urging residents to maintain vigilance and share actionable intelligence, especially as the festive season approaches—a period traditionally marked by heightened security concerns.
