Victor Osimhen delivered a stellar performance, scoring twice as the Super Eagles of Nigeria powered past the Panthers of Gabon with a commanding 4–1 win in extra time to progress to the next playoff stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The thrilling encounter took place on Thursday at the Stade Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco.

After a tense and goalless first half, Nigeria broke the deadlock early in the second period through Akor Adams, who capitalised on a defensive mistake to slot home the opener. However, Gabon struck back just four minutes before the end of regulation time, forcing the match into extra time.

In the added period, Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead with a calm finish before Victor Osimhen took control of the game, netting twice in quick succession to secure an emphatic victory and put the result well beyond Gabon’s reach.

The Super Eagles’ defensive unit, marshalled by Benjamin Frederick and Calvin Bassey, held firm throughout the contest, thwarting Gabon’s late advances and maintaining composure under pressure. Their solid defensive organisation ensured that the Panthers’ second-half equaliser remained their only success of the night.

This victory propels Nigeria a step closer to booking a ticket to the 2026 World Cup. The team’s qualification hopes had already been boosted by a dominant 4–0 triumph over the Benin Republic, where Osimhen produced a sensational hat-trick that secured the Super Eagles’ place among the top runners-up in the African qualifiers.

Gabon, who finished second in Group F behind Ivory Coast, also earned their spot in the playoffs but were ultimately outclassed by the Nigerians’ superior pace, teamwork, and precision in front of goal.

The Super Eagles will now face either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 16 in the decisive final playoff round. The winner of that fixture will advance to the intercontinental playoff, where they will battle for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

What You Should Know

Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s star striker and 2023 African Footballer of the Year, continues to prove instrumental in the Super Eagles’ World Cup campaign.

His brace against Gabon adds to an already impressive run of form that included a hat-trick against Benin Republic.

With Nigeria edging closer to qualification, Osimhen’s leadership and scoring prowess remain key assets as the team prepares for their next crucial clash against either Cameroon or DR Congo.
