Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown has been arrested and extradited to the United States from the United Arab Emirates, where authorities say he had been attempting to avoid prosecution for a shooting incident that occurred in South Florida earlier this year.

Law enforcement sources confirmed that the 37-year-old seven-time Pro Bowl selection was turned over by UAE authorities this week and accompanied by federal agents during his return to the New York Metropolitan Area. Brown was subsequently transferred to local police custody and is expected to be transported back to South Florida, where the alleged crime took place.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star is anticipated to be held at the Miami-Dade Department of Corrections on one count of attempted second-degree murder with a deadly weapon—a charge that carries a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison under Florida law.

The charges stem from an alleged shooting incident that occurred in mid-May at an influencer boxing event hosted by popular streamer Adin Ross in Florida. According to the alleged victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, Brown became enraged during the event and attempted to shoot him with a handgun.

In an interview with TMZ Sports shortly after the incident, Nantambu claimed that Brown “snapped” on him without provocation, escalating what may have begun as a verbal altercation into a potentially deadly confrontation.

Brown has vigorously disputed the allegations, maintaining that his actions were in self-defense. According to the retired receiver, he was being targeted by multiple individuals who were attempting to rob and assault him at the event. Brown has insisted he acted only to protect himself from what he perceived as an imminent threat.

Following the May incident, Brown apparently fled to Dubai, a city in the United Arab Emirates known for its lack of an extradition treaty with the United States in many circumstances. However, law enforcement officials were able to coordinate with UAE authorities to secure his return.

The extradition represents a significant development in a case that has lingered for half a year, with authorities working through international channels to bring Brown back to face charges.

This latest legal entanglement adds to a growing list of controversies that have marred Brown’s life since his departure from professional football. Once considered one of the most dominant receivers in NFL history, with four First-Team All-Pro selections and a receiving triple crown in 2014, Brown’s career imploded amid allegations of sexual misconduct, erratic behavior, and conflicts with team management.

Since leaving the NFL following his second stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022, Brown has attempted to maintain relevance through social media and appearances at various celebrity events, including the influencer boxing circuit, where this alleged incident occurred.

Brown is expected to be arraigned in a South Florida court in the coming days, where he will enter a plea to the attempted murder charge. If convicted, he could face significant prison time.

His legal team has not yet issued a public statement regarding the extradition or the charges he now faces.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Former NFL star Antonio Brown, 37, has been extradited from Dubai and arrested on attempted second-degree murder charges stemming from an alleged shooting at a Florida boxing event in May. Brown fled to the UAE for six months before authorities brought him back to face charges that could result in up to 15 years in prison.

While the alleged victim claims Brown attacked him unprovoked, Brown maintains he acted in self-defense against people trying to rob him. This marks another serious legal crisis for the once-elite receiver whose post-NFL life has been plagued by controversy. He now awaits arraignment in South Florida.
