Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the second phase of the Adiyan Water Works will supply 70 million gallons of water daily upon completion.

During an inspection of the project site in Ogun on Wednesday, the governor revealed that the project had reached 80 percent completion.

“Adiyan II is designed to produce 70 million gallons per day, and from today’s inspection, we can see that it is about 80 percent completed,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

He noted that key electromagnetic and electromechanical components, including pumps, are on-site, with installation set to begin soon. According to him, 70 to 75 percent of the required equipment has already arrived, especially for the raw water intake system, where pipes are being laid from Akute to the Ogun River.

The contractor, he said, is working on all three components of the project and has assured that in the next 10 to 12 months, the site will be fully completed.

Sanwo-Olu commended both the contractor and the local community for their cooperation in ensuring the provision of potable water for Lagos residents. He explained that pipes extend from Akute, drawing water from the Ogun River to Adiyan.

“The local community is pleased with the development, as seen from the warm reception we received. Compensation has already been paid by both the Lagos and Ogun state governments,” he added.

Despite the progress, the governor acknowledged that more work remains to be done, particularly in transmission and capacity building, before the project is fully operational.

“The job is not finished yet; we still have a lot to do. This is a promise fulfilled, though delayed. Lagosians will be proud of this project as it will enhance both the economy and quality of life in the state,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that ensuring access to potable water is a key government responsibility, especially in a megacity like Lagos.

“Water is a critical resource that the government must provide, and we are pleased that Adiyan II will fulfil this responsibility,” he stated.

He further disclosed plans to lay pipes across the Lagos Lagoon to extend water supply to areas like Ikoyi and Lekki.
