Viktor Gyokeres scored twice as Arsenal cruised past Atletico Madrid with a dominant 4–0 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, extending their flawless run in this season’s Champions League.

Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring before Gyokeres broke his nine-game goal drought with a quick double in a 13-minute stretch around the hour mark.

The Premier League leaders now sit alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan as the only teams with nine points from their first three matches — maintaining a perfect start to their European campaign.

Before the match, Gyokeres’ goal-scoring form had been one of Mikel Arteta’s few concerns in an otherwise stellar start to the season. The Swedish striker, who joined from Sporting Lisbon to solve Arsenal’s need for a prolific No. 9, had netted just three goals in 11 prior appearances — all coming in home fixtures against Leeds and Nottingham Forest.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, continued their struggles on the road, remaining winless away from home this season. Their collapse after a competitive first hour will worry manager Diego Simeone, especially with another defensive meltdown in Europe.

Arsenal’s defensive solidity was again on full display — this clean sheet means they have conceded just three goals in 12 games across all competitions.

Atletico’s Julian Alvarez came close to giving the visitors the lead twice — first failing to capitalize on a poor clearance from David Raya, then rattling the crossbar from distance early in the second half. Arsenal’s best first-half chance came when Eberechi Eze’s deflected strike struck the woodwork.

The breakthrough came through Arsenal’s trademark strength on set pieces. Declan Rice’s pinpoint in-swinging free-kick met Gabriel’s powerful header, sending the Emirates crowd into raptures.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, returning at left-back in one of only two changes from the weekend’s 1–0 win over Fulham, showcased his attacking flair with a brilliant run that set up the second goal. His cutback found Martinelli, who curled a precise finish into the far corner for his third goal in as many Champions League games.

Gyokeres then added two quick goals — first, a deflected close-range shot off David Hancko that wrong-footed Jan Oblak, and moments later, a tap-in from Gabriel’s header off Rice’s corner.

With the game comfortably sealed, Arteta substituted Gabriel, Gyokeres, Eze, Jurrien Timber, and Martin Zubimendi to preserve energy ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

Arsenal, who reached the semi-finals last season for the first time since 2009 before bowing out to eventual champions PSG, look even stronger this term after another ambitious summer transfer window. The North London side now appear poised to mount a serious challenge for their first-ever Champions League title.

Meanwhile, Atletico’s European campaign continues to falter, with just three points from three matches and consecutive defeats on English soil after last month’s loss to Liverpool.

What You Should Know

Arsenal’s emphatic 4–0 win over Atletico Madrid underscores their growing dominance under Mikel Arteta.

Viktor Gyokeres’ return to form, combined with Arsenal’s defensive solidity and set-piece strength, highlights a team ready to challenge Europe’s elite. For Atletico, the loss deepens concerns over their poor away form and lack of consistency.
