Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist and a close ally of President Donald Trump, was shot dead during a public appearance in Utah, leaving the nation in shock. More than 30 hours after the incident, authorities were still searching for the gunman.
Kirk, who led the country’s largest conservative youth movement, an organization he co-founded in 2012 at just 18 years old, was speaking to students and supporters at Utah Valley University around midday. He wore a white t-shirt emblazoned with the word “Freedom” as he answered questions under a tent.

Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who attended the gathering, told Fox News that Kirk had been responding to a question about “transgender shooters, mass shooters” when the gunfire erupted. The 31-year-old collapsed with a fatal wound to the neck, and his death was later confirmed by President Trump.
Investigators said the attacker used a high-powered bolt-action Mauser 30-06 rifle, firing from the rooftop of a building about 200 yards away. Security footage released by the FBI showed a young man in dark clothing, a baseball cap, and a long-sleeved top decorated with an American flag and eagle motif. Converse-style sneakers with white soles were also noted.
The weapon was later recovered in nearby woodland, along with palm prints marking the shooter’s escape route. Despite these leads, progress in locating the suspect has been slow, and the FBI has announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Authorities have yet to provide any motive for the assassination. Forensic evidence is still being processed at multiple crime labs. Utah Governor Spencer Cox cautioned against misinformation spreading online, warning that foreign actors, including China, were using bots to amplify discord.
Kirk’s political profile was both influential and divisive. A powerful figure on the Republican right, he was instrumental in boosting Trump’s youth vote during the 2024 election. Yet his outspoken views, including anti-immigration stances and conservative positions on social issues, drew criticism from Democrats and even occasional clashes with hard-right figures who considered him insufficiently extreme.

The killing has sparked widespread political reaction. Leaders across the spectrum condemned the attack, urging Americans to resist deepening polarization. President Trump initially blamed “the radical left” for the violence but later described Kirk as “an advocate of nonviolence,” softening his rhetoric. He announced that Kirk would be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously and pledged to attend his funeral.
Vice President JD Vance transported Kirk’s casket to Phoenix on Air Force Two, placing his hands on the coffin as it was carried off the plane in a solemn moment.
