US Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has taken legal action against President Donald Trump’s decision to dismiss her from office, intensifying the standoff between the White House and the central bank.
In court filings submitted on Thursday, Cook argued that “this case challenges President Trump’s unprecedented and illegal attempt to remove Governor Cook from her position, which, if allowed to occur, would be the first of its kind in the Board’s history.”

Through the lawsuit, Cook is seeking a ruling that reaffirms her role as a Federal Reserve governor, enabling her to continue her official responsibilities. She is also requesting “immediate declaratory and injunctive relief” to preserve the congressionally mandated independence of Fed officials.
The case follows Trump’s public announcement on Monday evening via his Truth Social platform, where he claimed to have removed Cook from her position, citing allegations that she had made false declarations in mortgage documents.

According to Trump, Cook allegedly listed two primary residences, one in Michigan and another in Georgia. Analysts have warned that this move signals a major escalation in the president’s effort to assert control over the Fed, raising concerns about the institution’s independence.
Notably, Cook has not been charged with any crime, and the allegations stem from events that took place before she assumed her current role.
