Arsenal began their pursuit of the Premier League title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, as United’s newly assembled attack failed to deliver in front of goal.

The decisive moment came in the 13th minute when Arsenal’s left-back, Riccardo Calafiori, capitalized on a costly error from United’s stand-in goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir. The Turkish shot-stopper, filling in for the injured Andre Onana, failed to deal with Declan Rice’s inswinging corner, leaving Calafiori with the simplest of headers into an empty net.

Manchester United, who spent a staggering £200 million ($271 million) on new forwards to solve last season’s scoring struggles, could not find a breakthrough despite promising signs. Debutants Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo showed glimpses of their quality but lacked the finishing touch, while substitute Benjamin Sesko—who was once a transfer target for Arsenal—was unable to change the outcome after being introduced in the second half.

United, who finished 15th last season with just 44 league goals—their lowest tally in more than five decades—showed renewed energy and aggression, particularly in the early exchanges. Cunha and Mbeumo tested Arsenal’s defensive pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba, unsettling the usually composed duo. Patrick Dorgu also came closest to leveling before halftime with a fierce strike that rattled the post.

Despite United’s efforts, Arsenal held firm. Goalkeeper David Raya was instrumental in keeping the Gunners ahead, making crucial saves to deny Cunha and Mbeumo, including a superb reflex stop to push away a powerful header from the latter.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who is under immense pressure to deliver the club’s first league title since the famous 2003/04 “Invincibles” season, relied on his defensive solidity to secure three crucial points. The victory keeps Arsenal level with fellow title contenders Liverpool and Manchester City, who also began their campaigns with wins.

For United, managed by Ruben Amorim, there were signs of encouragement despite the loss. The new arrivals injected energy and optimism into Old Trafford, with more than 75,000 fans witnessing a spirited, though ultimately fruitless, performance.

As Arsenal march on in their title challenge, United will look to quickly turn promise into goals if they are to avoid another disappointing campaign.

What you should know

Arsenal claimed a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford thanks to Riccardo Calafiori’s early goal, which resulted from an error by United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

Despite United’s £200 million investment in new attacking talent, their frontline was unable to score, with Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya standing firm.

The victory keeps Arsenal in step with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, while United were left to reflect on missed opportunities in their Premier League opener.
