The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has lifted the lifetime ban previously imposed on Ms. Comfort Emmanson for her alleged unruly behavior during an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos on August 10, 2025.

The decision follows an appeal for leniency by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

AON spokesperson, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, explained that the reversal came after considering multiple factors, including Emmanson’s reported remorse, the withdrawal of the initial complaint, the dismissal of charges, and her release from custody. He stressed, however, that this was a one-off act of clemency, not a softening of the aviation sector’s disciplinary stance.

“This is about closing this chapter while keeping our focus on safety and discipline,” Okonkwo said. “We maintain a zero-tolerance approach to unruly passenger conduct, and any future incident will be met with firm sanctions.” He added that improved awareness among passengers, crew, and security personnel is key to reducing disruptive incidents in aviation.

Ibom air incident

Meanwhile, eyewitness David Ogede, a lawyer and fellow passenger seated next to Emmanson, offered a different perspective on the events that unfolded. Speaking on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief, Ogede claimed Emmanson’s outburst was “triggered” by the manner in which a flight attendant addressed her.

According to Ogede, while the first hostess politely reminded passengers to switch off their phones, the second approached Emmanson in a confrontational tone. He recounted that Emmanson explained her phone’s power button was faulty and requested assistance, but the attendant refused to touch the device, instead instructing her to navigate through the settings. When Emmanson expressed confusion, Ogede alleged the attendant told her, “I do not have time for your nonsense.”

Ogede stated that another passenger intervened, urging the attendant to speak more respectfully, but she ignored the advice. He further claimed the attendant threatened Emmanson by saying, “If you say another word, I will deal with you,” prompting Emmanson’s angry verbal response. A fellow passenger later assisted in switching off her phone, and Ogede insisted she had been trying to comply with instructions from the start.

In a related development, Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, who was recently involved in a separate airport incident, has accepted his appointment by the federal government as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol. His manager, Kunle Rasheed, said KWAM 1 views the role as a form of community service and a chance to promote better conduct in aviation spaces.

What you should know

The lifting of Emmanson’s ban was an exceptional measure influenced by ministerial appeal and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

AON maintains its strict zero-tolerance policy toward unruly passengers, warning that similar behavior in the future will attract harsh penalties.

Eyewitness accounts have introduced nuance to the case, suggesting the confrontation may have been avoidable with better handling by airline staff.
