Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have once again etched their names into the history books by claiming an extraordinary fifth straight AfroBasket Women’s title, a record no other African nation has achieved.

In a gripping final held on Sunday night, the Nigerian side overcame a spirited Mali team with a 78-64 victory, underlining their unrivaled dominance in African women’s basketball.

The win marks Nigeria’s seventh AfroBasket title overall and continues an astonishing run of 29 consecutive wins in the competition since 2015, a streak that highlights their resilience, strength, and tactical superiority. As has been the case throughout the tournament, the Nigerian squad didn’t begin the match with their full intensity. But despite the sluggish opening, they responded sharply to Mali’s strong push and fought their way back into the game.

Coach Rena Wakama’s team began finding its rhythm in the second quarter, matching Mali’s pace and eventually drawing level by halftime, with both sides locked at 41 points apiece. The comeback was reminiscent of their semifinal clash against Senegal—a game many dubbed the “final before the final.” In that contest, Nigeria had to tap deep into their reserves to edge out Senegal 75-68 in a physically demanding matchup.

Central to D’Tigress’ triumph in the final were the standout contributions from Amy Okonkwo and Ezinne Kalu. Kalu led with 20 points, delivering critical shots during the second and third quarters that shifted momentum firmly in Nigeria’s favor. Okonkwo supported with 19 points, offering poise and reliability whenever her team needed it most. The game also saw vital inputs from Promise Amukamara, Victoria Macaulay, and Musa, who added nine crucial points and four rebounds—underlining the depth and unity that defines this Nigerian team.

The turning point arrived in the third quarter, as D’Tigress clamped down defensively and surged ahead, outscoring Mali 20-15. They entered the final quarter with a 61-56 lead and showed no signs of relinquishing their advantage, eventually closing out the game with an authoritative 14-point margin.

This latest feat reinforces Nigeria’s position as the most formidable force in African women’s basketball. It also adds further shine to the achievements of Coach Rena Wakama, who has become the first woman to guide the team to a continental title. Her evolution from former player to head coach continues to inspire a new generation of female athletes.

In recognition of their achievement, the team is now expected to receive generous commendation from President Bola Tinubu. Just last week, he had rewarded the Super Falcons with a $100,000 bonus after they clinched their 10th WAFCON title in Morocco. Following D’Tigress’ semifinal victory, President Tinubu had praised the team for their tenacity and spirit, offering special acknowledgment to Coach Wakama for her leadership and contributions both on and off the court.

What you should know

D’Tigress’ fifth consecutive AfroBasket title not only sets a new continental record but also extends their undefeated streak in the competition to 29 games since 2015.

This historic triumph was powered by the clutch performances of key players like Ezinne Kalu and Amy Okonkwo and guided by the leadership of Coach Rena Wakama, the first woman to head the team.

Their dominance now stands as a symbol of excellence in African women’s basketball.
