President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumphant progression to the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.

Their latest feat marks the fifth time in a row the team has advanced to the grand finale of the prestigious continental event.

The President’s congratulatory message was conveyed in an official statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. In it, President Tinubu celebrated the team’s tenacity and consistent dominance after they edged past their long-standing rivals, Senegal, with a spirited 75–68 win in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Describing the contest as more than a typical semi-final clash, Tinubu referred to it as “the final before the final,” lauding the D’Tigress for yet another commanding victory over Senegal—their seventh successive triumph against the West African rivals. The win not only sealed Nigeria’s spot in the championship final but also ensured their qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifiers.

“I have closely observed the discipline, composure, and remarkable team spirit that D’Tigress have demonstrated throughout this competition,” the President said. “These qualities have not only earned Nigeria immense pride but have also attracted global recognition for both our players and coaching staff.”

The President went further to recognize and celebrate the pivotal role of Rena Wakama, head coach of the D’Tigress, who made history as the first woman to lead the team. He acknowledged her deep basketball background and the inspiration she brings to the squad—first as a former player and now as an astute strategist.

“Coach Rena Wakama’s leadership is propelling D’Tigress to new levels of achievement in a fiercely competitive sport,” Tinubu said, commending her ongoing efforts.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to support the team as they aim to clinch a fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship title, and potentially, more accolades on the global stage.

Saturday’s clash against Senegal was a thrilling affair, with the defending champions needing to summon every ounce of their experience and resilience. Trailing by eight points at the beginning of the fourth quarter, D’Tigress turned the tide with a formidable rally.

Senegal’s standout performer, Cierra Dillard, delivered an impressive performance with 26 points, seven rebounds, and three assists—spearheading her side’s dominant third quarter where they outscored Nigeria 21–9.

Despite the pressure, the Nigerian team regrouped. Ezinne Kalu, who finished the game with 19 points, delivered a key moment with a decisive steal from Senegal’s Lena Timera, followed by a composed two-pointer that helped turn the momentum. Shortly after, Victory Macaulay’s hook shot extended Nigeria’s lead to 69–66. In the dying minutes, D’Tigress outscored Senegal 10–3, firmly securing their place in the final.

With this victory, Nigeria’s winning streak at the AfroBasket now extends to an extraordinary 28 games, with their last defeat dating back to 2015 against Angola. The reigning champions now await the outcome of the other semi-final between South Sudan and Mali to determine their opponent in the final showdown.
