President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the appointment of Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), marking a significant leadership shift at the helm of Nigeria’s climate governance agency.
Majekodunmi, a seasoned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer, succeeds Nkiruka Madueke, the pioneer Director-General of the NCCC, who was appointed by President Tinubu in June 2024. Her appointment was formally announced on Thursday through a statement issued by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Majekodunmi brings to the role over 17 years of experience in the fields of renewable energy, carbon markets, and climate governance. She has collaborated with both global and national institutions to shape strategies and frameworks addressing environmental and economic sustainability.
“She previously served as the NCCC’s Financial Adviser and has played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s climate policies and international engagements,” Onanuga said.
President Tinubu expressed his appreciation to Madueke for her foundational contributions and commitment to the Council’s objectives. Her tenure laid the groundwork for ongoing reforms and programs aimed at advancing Nigeria’s environmental and climate resilience efforts.
The presidential statement further emphasized that Majekodunmi’s appointment signals a renewed commitment by the Tinubu administration to integrate climate action into the broader framework of sustainable development.
“Majekodunmi’s appointment reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to tackling climate change as both an environmental necessity and a driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion,” Onanuga concluded.
