The Lagos State Government has called on the Medical Guild, an association of medical and dental practitioners under its employment, to suspend its planned three-day warning strike over alleged salary deductions and other related grievances.

In a statement released by the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the government confirmed that it is actively addressing the concerns raised by the Medical Guild’s leadership. The doctors had earlier declared their intention to begin a warning strike on Monday, July 28, 2025, citing what they described as unilateral reductions in their salaries.

The Guild further stated that following the warning strike, a 21-day ultimatum would be issued to the government. Should the state fail to meet their demands within that period, the doctors warned, they would be left with no choice but to embark on an indefinite industrial action.

Responding to the situation, the Lagos State Government assured the public that efforts are underway to resolve the dispute. The state emphasized that it is engaging the Medical Guild leadership through constructive dialogue to reach a resolution that benefits all parties, particularly the general population that relies heavily on public healthcare services.

“As a responsible Government, we value the critical role our healthcare professionals play in delivering quality and timely health services to the over 20 million residents of Lagos State,” the Ministry stated.

It added, “We urge the Medical Guild to continue on the path of dialogue while we work to reach a peaceful and just resolution in the interest of all parties, especially the residents who may bear the brunt of any service disruption.”

The Ministry appealed directly to the Guild to reconsider its decision to embark on the strike and to allow the ongoing discussions to conclude productively. It reiterated that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remains dedicated to improving the welfare of healthcare professionals and maintaining industrial peace within the state’s health sector.

What You Should Know

The Medical Guild represents doctors working in Lagos State government hospitals. Their planned strike over salary deductions could significantly disrupt healthcare delivery across the state.

While the government has acknowledged the doctors’ concerns and initiated talks, the potential for a prolonged strike looms if resolutions are not swiftly achieved. At the core of the matter is the balance between safeguarding public health services and addressing the welfare of frontline medical professionals.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration faces a crucial test in averting industrial unrest within one of the state’s most vital sectors.
