Spanish giants Barcelona have completed the loan signing of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, in a deal that includes an option for a permanent transfer.
The 27-year-old England international will remain at the Camp Nou until June 30, 2026, as part of an agreement unveiled on Wednesday by the La Liga champions.
“Barcelona and Manchester United have reached a deal for the loan of the player Marcus Rashford until June 30, 2026,” the Catalan club said in an official statement. “The agreement also establishes an option to buy the English forward.”
According to multiple reports in Spain, Barcelona will cover approximately 75 percent of Rashford’s £325,000-a-week salary (around $435,000), while the player has agreed to forgo the remainder to facilitate the move.
Once considered a cornerstone of Manchester United, Rashford had fallen out of favour under current head coach Ruben Amorim. The striker, who made his senior debut for United in 2015, ended the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa, scoring four goals in 17 appearances before a hamstring injury curtailed his campaign in April.
Tensions had reportedly grown between Rashford and Amorim, with the Portuguese coach questioning the striker’s commitment and hunger—concerns that pushed the England international further to the fringes at Old Trafford.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick had previously praised Rashford alongside Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, describing them as “fantastic players” as the club explored options to strengthen their left-wing position. Although Barcelona aimed to bring in Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, the Spanish winger signed a contract extension at San Mames, forcing the Catalans to pivot.
Last season, Barcelona captured a domestic treble, dominating in attack, but lacked depth on the wings beyond Raphinha and rising star Lamine Yamal. Rashford’s versatility allows him to play both as a wide forward and centrally, potentially offering cover for the aging Robert Lewandowski, who turns 37 in August.
Despite the historical lack of British players at Barcelona—few have worn the Blaugrana shirt since the 1980s when the likes of Gary Lineker and Mark Hughes featured—Rashford now joins that rare list. More recently, young English players like Marcus McGuane and Louie Barry spent brief periods at the club without establishing first-team roles.
Rashford has accumulated 138 goals in 426 appearances for Manchester United, but his fall from grace was further highlighted when former Red Devils striker Teddy Sheringham publicly criticized the move. “From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that’s a step up that he hasn’t deserved,” Sheringham told SkyBet.
With Rashford’s future at Old Trafford uncertain, United are reportedly planning a summer overhaul, with other players like Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho also tipped to leave.
However, Barcelona still face challenges in registering new signings under La Liga’s financial regulations. After encountering hurdles with players such as Dani Olmo last season, the club may need to balance the books before officially registering Rashford and their first summer addition, goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
