Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that leaders within the new political coalition will collectively support whoever emerges as the presidential flagbearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, on Wednesday, the former governor emphasized that the coalition was committed to backing a transparent and credible process for selecting the party’s standard bearer.

Amaechi, who previously served two terms as governor of Rivers State, reaffirmed the group’s united front, stating, “The moment anybody emerges from the primary, all of us will support; that’s the agreement.” He went further to stress the importance of fairness in the primaries, adding, “We insist on a free and fair, transparent primary.”

Having parted ways with the All Progressives Congress (APC), Amaechi also lamented the rising levels of hunger and hardship across the country. He urged the people of Rivers State to rally under the banner of the ADC and work toward removing the current APC-led administration in the forthcoming general elections.

He said, “Every Rivers man who thinks good of the state and country should move to register with the new party and ensure that we remove the current government and stop the hunger that everybody is suffering from.”

The ADC has become the coalition’s chosen political platform to challenge the anticipated re-election bid of President Bola Tinubu, who represents the ruling APC.

The new coalition comprises several prominent political figures, many of whom were major contenders in the 2023 presidential elections. Among them are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi—both of whom finished behind Tinubu in the last presidential race.

The alliance also includes experienced politicians such as former Senate President David Mark, who, like Atiku, exited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the movement. Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai is also listed among the high-profile members of the coalition.

The coalition was officially unveiled on July 2, with David Mark introduced as the interim chairman. During the launch, he said the initiative was designed to preserve the nation’s democratic integrity and prevent Nigeria from slipping into a de facto one-party state.

What you should know

Rotimi Amaechi, a seasoned politician and former transportation minister, is now part of a new political coalition that has adopted the ADC as its platform to challenge APC dominance.

Alongside other political heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and David Mark, Amaechi’s support signals a significant realignment ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
