Israeli Strikes Kill Dozens in Gaza as Ceasefire Talks with Hamas Stall

More than 40 Palestinians were killed on Sunday in Israeli air strikes across Gaza, including at a bustling market and a water distribution point, Gaza’s civil defence agency reported.

Among the victims were eight children, raising the death toll from Israel’s ongoing offensive to at least 58,026, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

The latest surge in violence comes amid stalled ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas in Doha. Both parties accused each other over the weekend of obstructing a potential 60-day truce and hostage exchange deal. A Palestinian source claimed Israel plans to keep military presence in over 40% of Gaza and potentially displace hundreds of thousands of residents, a claim Israel has not officially addressed.

Israeli military officials admitted a “technical error” during one drone strike in Nuseirat refugee camp, saying the munition missed its intended target—a member of the Islamic Jihad—by several meters.

Despite growing international pressure and domestic protests in Tel Aviv calling for a hostage deal, Israel maintains that any long-term ceasefire must include Hamas disarmament. Hamas, on the other hand, is demanding a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Meanwhile, fuel shortages continue to cripple humanitarian efforts, with over two million Palestinians now facing worsening conditions. Amid this, pro-Palestinian activists have launched another aid vessel, the Handala, from Sicily, even as Israel recently detained passengers from a previous mission.

What you should know

The current conflict in Gaza has resulted in over 58,000 Palestinian deaths and continues to spark international concern. Ceasefire talks remain deadlocked as both Israel and Hamas hold firm to opposing conditions, while civilians bear the brunt of ongoing strikes and humanitarian decline.
