In a strategic move aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s fight against insurgency in the North East, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has announced the creation of Sector 4 of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in Mubi, Adamawa State.

This was made known during the CDS’s operational visit to the state on Saturday, where he held high-level discussions with Governor Ahmadu Fintiri. The visit, according to a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, was focused on assessing troop readiness and identifying key areas where operational support and logistics can be enhanced.

Speaking during the engagement, General Musa emphasized the indispensable connection between security and sustainable development. He stressed that when governance yields tangible benefits to the people, they in turn are more inclined to support and defend democratic institutions and national stability.

Musa identified poverty and illiteracy as core factors fuelling insurgency and other forms of insecurity. He explained that individuals in vulnerable communities are often prime targets for recruitment by terrorist and criminal groups, making it imperative to address the socio-economic root causes alongside military operations.

While acknowledging the broader security challenges in the region, the CDS commended the people of Adamawa for maintaining relative peace. He assured them that plans are already in motion to establish more barracks and bolster military presence in the state to curb future threats.

In his interaction with troops in the operational zone, Musa praised their courage and commitment to duty. He noted their sacrifices have led to significant improvements in regional security and urged them to remain vigilant and continue dismantling criminal networks threatening national peace.

The CDS specifically lauded the efforts of the officers and men of the 23 Brigade, attributing the state’s current peace and stability to their proactive military operations and collaboration with other security agencies.

Responding to the CDS’s remarks, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri reaffirmed the Adamawa State Government’s unwavering support for the Nigerian Armed Forces. He pledged continued assistance in the form of logistics, strategic guidance, and operational resources to enable the military to fulfill its constitutional role effectively.

Fintiri expressed optimism that the newly established Sector 4 would significantly enhance operational efficiency and response capabilities in counter-insurgency missions across the state. He also acknowledged that an increased military presence may have triggered a spike in terrorist activities, but emphasized that such a presence remains necessary for long-term peace and deterrence.

As part of the state’s contribution to the security architecture, Governor Fintiri disclosed that he had directed immediate rehabilitation of all access roads within the Gibson Jalo Barracks. He also announced plans to scale up the recruitment of local hunters who would assist in community-based intelligence gathering and support military patrols, especially in difficult terrains.

The establishment of Sector 4 in Mubi signifies a renewed determination by the Nigerian military to sustain pressure on insurgents and restore normalcy to crisis-prone areas in the North East. It also reflects growing synergy between state governments and the federal security apparatus in tackling insecurity through a multi-dimensional approach.

As Nigeria continues to confront terrorism, banditry, and other threats to national unity, stakeholders maintain that sustained military engagement, local partnerships, and comprehensive socio-economic reforms will be key to achieving lasting peace.
