Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in the streaming music landscape, becoming the first African female artist to surpass 5 million followers on Spotify.

The 22-year-old singer, whose real name is Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, reached this historic benchmark while maintaining her position as one of Africa’s most streamed artists on the platform.

The achievement comes as Starr continues to dominate global music charts and expand her international fan base. Currently boasting 17.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify, the “Rush” crooner has established herself as a formidable force in the Afrobeats genre since her debut in 2021

While Starr claims the follower milestone, she continues to compete closely with fellow Nigerian superstar Tems in overall streaming numbers. According to the latest data, Starr has accumulated 2.7 billion streams across all her credited work on the platform, while Tems leads with 3.8 billion streams. However, Starr ranks as the second most-streamed Nigerian female artist on Spotify, with 1.632 billion streams.

Her most successful track to date remains “Santa,” the viral collaboration with Jamaican producer Rvssian and Puerto Rican reggaeton star Rauw Alejandro, which has garnered over 707 million streams. The track officially crossed 500 million streams on Spotify as of November 2024, making it her first song to reach that milestone. The fusion of Afropop, reggaeton, and dancehall elements in “Santa” exemplifies the cross-cultural appeal that has propelled Starr to international stardom.

Her breakout single “Rush,” meanwhile, continues to perform strongly with over 474 million streams as her most successful lead single. The Grammy-nominated hit has exceeded 378 million streams, cementing its status as one of Afrobeats’ most recognizable anthems.

Starr’s meteoric rise reflects the broader global embrace of African music, particularly Afrobeats, which has seen unprecedented international success in recent years. Her journey from a confident young performer in Lagos to a chart-topping international artist represents a new generation of African musicians breaking barriers on the world stage.

The Mavin Records signee, who released her debut EP in 2021, followed by her album “19 & Dangerous,” has consistently demonstrated her ability to craft infectious melodies that resonate across cultural boundaries. Her sophomore album, “The Year I Turned 21,” further solidified her position as one of Africa’s most promising musical exports.

This latest milestone not only celebrates Starr’s achievement but also marks a significant moment for African music on global streaming platforms, as the continent’s artists continue to gain recognition and followers worldwide. With her growing international presence, including recent performances as an opening act for major artists, Starr appears poised to reach even greater heights in the global music industry.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Ayra Starr has made history as the first African female artist to reach 5 million Spotify followers, cementing her status as a global Afrobeats pioneer. While she trails Tems in total streams (2.7 billion vs. 3.8 billion), her massive hit “Santa,” with over 707 million streams, and breakout single “Rush,” with 474 million streams, demonstrate the international crossover power of contemporary African music. This milestone reflects the broader global embrace of Afrobeats and positions Starr as a key figure in Africa’s musical expansion onto the world stage.
